Copies of documents, microfilm, etc., in this collection are in Virginia. Most of these documents found here
have a survey report number (SR Number), a reel number, or some other means to identify it, to obtain
more information. The Library of Virginia curtailed public services in the spring of 1996. They are in the
process of moving to a new location and plan to re-open to the public in January 1997, new address is:
800 E. Broad St, Richmond, Va. Microfilm is available for use by researchers through interlibrary loan
from the Manuscripts Department of the University of Virginia Library (Charlottesville, Va 22903) and the
Library of Virginia (Richmond, Virginia 2321903491). Please take note that this is one of the services that
has been curtailed until January 1997. To obtain updates on their move call toll-free (1-888-LVA-1996 or
in Richmond/local 649-9258). Below you will find a glossary of terms associated with these documents.
Agent: A VCRP researcher sent to foreign libraries, archives, and other institutions to identify (and
describe for microfilming) manuscripts that contain information about Virginia history between 1607
and 1783.
VCRP: Virginia Colonial Records Project.
Title: An element in the heading of each Survey Report created by the agent to identify or summarize
the contents of the particular report.
Depository: The element in the heading of each Survey Report used by the agents to identify the
foreign
repository in which manuscripts were examined for that report.
Survey Report: A typewritten report prepared by the agent who examined manuscripts about colonial
Virginia in collections of foreign repositories. The 14,704 Survey Reports in existence as of January
1996 total more than twenty-eight thousand typed pages.
Survey Report Number: (SR Number). The number typed (old SR Number), or stamped (new SR
Number) in the upper right hand corner of each Survey Report that identify the numbering sequence.
Reel Number: The element in the heading of each Survey Report Number that identifues the cardinal
number assigned in the United States to VCRP microfilm reels ordered and shipped by the agents.
The number following the label Reel Number in the database refer to 963 reels of VCRP microfilm
in existence as of January 1996.
Class: The element in the heading of each Survey Report used by agents to identify manucripts and
manuscript collections according to the cataloging system in use at each foreign depository.
References: An element in the heading of each Survey Report that identifies published or other finding
aids in foreign depositories that assisted an agent in discovering Virginia-related manterial in those
collections.
