Land Office, Northern Neck Grants (Virginia)

This list contains only the surname Stephens/Stevens

This list contains the recorded land grants issued by the agents of the Fairfax Family between 1690 and 1781
and by the Commonwealth between 1786 and 1874. The list contains the name of the grantee, the county in
which the land was located at the time of the grant, a description of the specific location, the number of acres,
and references to the location of the recorded document in the Grants Books.

The Northern Neck was a proprietary, consisting of 5,282,000 acres, situated in the area between the Rappa-
hannock and Potamac Rivers. In 1649 King Charles II, then exiled, gave this unsettled region to a small group
his loyal supporters. By 1688 most of the region was owned by Thomas, Lord Culpeper. Lord Culpeper's
daughter married Thomas, Lord Fairfax in 1690 and the region became synonymous with the Fairfax name

Beginning in 1690 grants were issued by agents of the proprietor. Individuals purchased warrants for a specific
amount of land in a specific location. The warrants were taken to a surveyor and the land surveyed. The plat
and any accompanying papers were returned to the proprietor's office and a grant was issued. The Northern
Neck proprietor's office and a grant was issued. The Northern Neck land office continued to operate during
the Revolution. It was closed after Lord Fairfax's death in 1781. Fairfax family interest ceased in 1808 when
the last surviving heir sold his title.

Northern Neck grants issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia were continued in separate books and separ-
ately maintained from the Regular Land Office Granbts until 1862.
