Case concerns tobacco entered on the "Anne Katherine" (ship, William Stevens, master) at
Gravesend.

Depositions:
4p/ George Frost, 5 Feb 1605/06: Served in a ship for her last voyage to St. Lucar in Spain
with STEVENS as master. Does not know how many of the casks put on board contained
tobacco; twelve hogshead of what he believed was tobacco were delivered into a hoy at
Tilbury below Gravesend, nine were delivered to the customs at London, and six hogshead
were hidden by the master.
Thomas Burley, 5 Feb 1605/06: Tobacco was supervised on board the ship by Peter Blanck,
a Dutchman. Saw some of the cargo put on a hoy at Tilbury with some put into a wherry
further up the river.
George Thompson, 8 Feb 1605/06: He put forty casks of tobacco in the hole. Some were
delivered out of the ship during his absence and some were hidden in the ballast. Blanck
paid the sailors money for their cooperation.

Collection of papers relating to separate cases of retailing tobacco without licenses.
4p/ Depositions taken at St. Collombe, 12 October 1636
(Witnesses give details of tobacco purchases in their area. Some deny buying
from unlicensed dealers but some do admit to it).
Anthony Illarye: Bought 30 lbs of tobacco from HENRY STEPHENS and re-sold it
in St. Collombe but did inform the patentees agent of this.
