Depositions on behalf of Claiborne:

2p/ William Pierce, 15 Aug 1638,
On the death of Captain Roger SMITH at Mulberry Island in Virginia,
his cattle were taken into the lands of Claiborne and Richard James as
his executors. SMITH owed Claiborne money. After his death he took
an inventory of his goods and the estate was sold to CAPTAIN RICHARD
STEPHENS.

William Alwinkle c. Richard Ingle
Witnesses on behalf of Alwinkle:

2p/ William Kinge, 23 July 1641,
Concerns tobacco brought back from Virginia in the ship "Blessing:
by John Alwinkle, now dead. Intended to make a second voyage on the
ship "Richard and Anne" in Sept 1640. Details of the goods shipped by
Alwinkle who died at sea on voyage. Ingle, the master, took possession
of the goods.

Repeats the evidence. "Richard and Anne" landed in Maryland and
Ingle sold the goods belonging to Alwinkle. Gives detail of the sale.

Sir Martin Beckman and Dame Ruth Beckman c. Samuel Groome et. al.

2p/ Further answers of Samuel Groome to the Bill of Complaint of
Sir Martin Beckman. 20 Feb 1694/5

The "Ruth" (ship) was not strong enough to go on a voyage to Virginia
and was forced to put into Plymouth. He tried to get her mended in time
to go with the convoy. Details of the correspondence he received from
Plymouth in early 1690/1 about the ship. Denied he ordered one Burrell
to leave the ship and appointed STEVENS to be master. The ship made
several stops on the way to Virginia for wine, which was against the
provisions of the Charter Party.

1p/ Further answers of Samuel Groome 7 Nov 1695

Denies ordering letters to be sent to his corrrespondents in Virginia or
Maryland with instructions for loading tobacco on the "Ruth".

(Appears that she in fact went to the Patuxent River in Maryland. See 145/37).

2p/ Complaint of Thomas Giles, 12 Feb 1706/7
Explains his relationship with Robert Hooke, who died in 1702 and whose
estate Giles is claiming. Believes it should be shared between himself and Anne
Hollis and ELIZABETH STEPHENS, but the latter and her daughter Elizabeth Dillon,
wife of Joseph Dillon took advantage of Giles' absence abroad (in Virginia) and
possessed themselves of his part of the estate. Claims there should be a fairer
settlement.

4p/ Answer of Joseph Dillon, 6 Nov 1707,
Details of the relationship between Robert Hooke and ELIZABETH STEPHENS,
both now deceased. Believes the estate was settled fairly.

4p/ Bill of complaint of Thomas Giles, 12 Feb 1706/7
From Virginia. Gives details of his inheritance of land, etc. in the Isle of
Wight. Did not claim his inheritance sooner because he has only just heard
of certain deaths. Alleges STEPHENS and Dillon conspired to rob him of his
due.

4p/ Answers of Joseph Dillon and Mary, his wife, no date.
Details of the relationship in the family regarding the inheritance after the
death of Robert Hooke in 1702. STEPHEN'S wife was a cousin of Hooke.
Dillon was employed to take an account of the estate. Encloses an inventory
of the estate.

4p/ Answers of LEWIS STEPHENS, 19 Feb 1707/8,
Details of the estate and relationships of the beneficiaries. Encloses an
account of the estate.

Witnesses for Gyles:

4p/ John Crouch, 19 July 1708,
Case concerns an estate on the Isle of Wight of Robert Hook,
deceased. Thomas Gyles lived in Virginia and in 1705 Cecily his brother
Robert's widow, asked the witness to write a letter to Thomas.

4p/ Daniel Sullivan, 27 July 1708,
Went to Virginia in Sept 1706 to deliver letters to Thomas Gyles
concerning the estate of Dr. Robert Hook. Thomas gave him a letter
to take back to England. Also showed Sullivan his papers signed by
John Knell and gave him a letter to deliver to Knell in England.

1p/ Daniel alias Joseph Mitchell, 27 July 1708,
Last time he saw Giles was in Virginia in March last. Identifies his
handwriting. Gave him two letters to deliver in England.
