In going through the Confederate Pension list I came across 2
Stephens/Stevens from Campbell Co, KY -
My ggg-grandfather, Enoch Stephens was from Campbell Co and his sons, James
and William were in the Civil War.
James is listed as Roll No. 259, pg. 80-- Act of 1916.

My question is where do I look this up?

Thanks for any information

AT LAST!! I can't tell you how excited I am to finally recieve information
on the Stephens family. All my life I have been told that we were
related to A.H. Stephens, but by the time I was old enough to be interested
all my family, literally, had passed on.
My grandmother was Opal Stephens, her father, Robert H. Stephens was the
son of J.G. Stephens, whose father Thomas, after fighting in the civil war
came to Arkansas. I have interesting information on these people, but can
go no further than Thomas. I have printed out all of the information you have
submitted, and am looking forward to reading every detail, with the hopes
of finally finding that missing link.
If you have any information on a Thomas Stephens from GA that fought in the
civil war and later moved to Ark. I would greatly appreciate it!
He was in his late 20's to mid 30's when he was in the war and he married
a Mary Moore, they had three children all boys. He moved to Ark. by himself alond
with the children, but left his wife there. It was told to me that
when he left for the war there were only two boys and when he returned there
was three, he was under the asumption that the third child was not his,(he took
the boy with him however to Ark.) I will insert this bit of info, Mental Illness
runs in this side of the family, nothing serious, just a bit odd, by which I was
not inflicted, but thought that might be a clue to some link. Also, they were all
well educated and intellegent people. J.G. owned a general store
and his son Robert was an accountant for a bank, they also owned a silent movie
theater, which my grandmother played the piano, and they bought the one of the first
electrical companies, ran by generators, but had to sell the company, due to the
fact that no one would pay thier electrical bills.
I have more stories if you would like to hear them. I look forward
to hearing from you.

Thank you ever so much!

Sincerely,

Robin

We exchanged half a dozen emails last July. I was unable to resolve a
logical question about the following:

At present, I believe that my Stephens line is as follows:

John Stephens
John Stephens 1616-
William Stephens 1645-1715
John Stephens 1704-1782
Joseph Stephens 1740-1815
John Stephens 1760-1810 m. 3rd Lucy Collins?
Frances Stephens 1798-1868 m. Mordecai Lawson

Accepting that Frances Stephens was a half-sister of Zachariah, your info
gives:

John Stephens
John Stephens 1616-
William Stephens 1645-1715
John Stephens 1666-1700
Jeremiah Stephens 1689-1760
Samuel Stephens
John Stephens 1760-1810 m. 3rd Lucy Collins?
Frances Stephens 1798-1868 m. Mordecai Lawson

The 'problem' is that John Stephens (b. 1666) is said to be the 14th
child (6th by second wife) of William Stephens (b. 1645). Even if William
married at 18 and his children had an average spread of 1.5 years, I come
up with 1683 as an approximate birth year of his 14th child.

I will visit your site again. If I can clearly see the line from William
to John trough John, Jeremiah and Samuel, I will make changes. In the
meantime, I added the following Note based on your information:

NOTE: The two generations below to John STEPHENS (1760-1810) are believed
to be correct, but unproved. Another source replaces the following two
generations with three generations: (1) John STEPHENS (b. 1666, NC)
married Elizabeth; (2) Jeremiah STEPHENS (b. 1689); (3) Samuel STEPHENS.

I would be delighted to correct my lineage, and add to earlier
generations, if I could get beyond the 'problem' noted above.

Steve

Tom,

At this time I don't believe my family is related to Alex. Stephens, purely
by the disitance in PA
between where he was and my 5-great-grandfather William Stephens was.
I'm sending you a copy of a notes document that I've put together from
looking at information, primarily
from the Family Tree Maker.

Thanks
Jim

William spent the early part of his life on the frontiers of Virginia, =
where he became a skilled Indian fighter. he was with his brother in =
Edgecomb, North Carolina in 1748, but rarely
remained long in any place. In 1753 he bought land in Salsbury, a pepper =

bought land of _ard Fairfax at

About ALEXANDER STEPHENS, born 1763 Source: Loudie S. Moffett ( have =
some problems here stevetho@datastar .net)

He became engaged in the Indian trade, and joined Bouquet during the =
French and Indian War. On one of his trading ventures to Detroit he ran =
into a fellow named Murphy, who had a
most peculiar scar on his forehead. Upon inquiry he learned that this =
man had been captured by the Indians and had been ransomed by a British =
trader in Detroit by whom he was
adopted. (The Indian Raid occurred 1756) Ten years after the raid in =
1776=20

By this time Alexander had married Cathren Baskin, daughter of James =
Baskin of Paxton Pennsylvania. The Baskins and Stephens were acquainted =
prior to the Indian raid in l766,
when Francis and William Baskin were killed and two of Williams =
children, Peggy, and the boy were abducted. Peggy was found by Bouquet =
in November 1764, but the boy was not
found until Alexander recognized him in Detroit9 where he was known by =
the name of Timothy Murphy given him by his adopted father. He recalled =
nothing of his birth family, but
Alexander persuaded him to return to Pennsylvania for a visit with his =
still living mother and other family members.=20

Alexander had married an Indian or half-breed girl, believed to have =
been a sister of Cornelius Atkinson with whom Alexander was so closely =
associated in the Indian trade and next to
whom he obtained land in Turbot Twp., Pennsylvania, prior to the Indian =
attack in 1756. By her he had, at least, 2 children, John, died .1775 in =
Georgia, who married 1766, Susannah.
Sarah, married Nehemiah Edge of Maryland, North Carolina and Georga.=20

John Stephens paid taxes on the land next to Cornelius Atkinson in =
Turbot Twp., 1769, but Alexander, a non-resident, paid them in l78l-82.=20

James Baskin had strenuously opposed his daughter Cathren's marrage to =
Alexander in 1766, even disowning her for a time, but eventually he =
seems to have been won over.=20

Hi.  I've been cruising the web today looking for information on my father's
family.  So far I think your web site was the most informative however I don't
know if we're decendents from John Stephens or not.

I would greatly appreciate any information you could give me on how to find
information.  I started with my grandparents birth certificates and came up
with a big zero.  Texas didn't keep records before 1903 and since they were
born in 1895 it is very difficult to find anything.  All of my father's
relatives are dead so they are of no help.  He was so much younger than his
brothers and he doesn't remember anything about his family.  Just in case
you've seen any names that might help me, here is what I have to work with:

? Stephens married Full blooded Cherokee indian
had two children Absolum Stephens  and Rachel Stephens
Absolum married Dolly Franks and Rachel married Jim Partridge
Absolum and Dolly had  7 children
Susie Stephens married Cal Lindsey
Jessie Stephens married Amous Rutlege
Ivy Stephens
Vesta Stehens married Troy Brock
Walter Stephens
Emmitt Stephens married several times
Luther Stephens married Lillie Mae ?
Virgil Stephens married Mary Garrison
Jim Stephens married Helen Garrison
W.  R. Stehens
Aulsie Stephens married Lois ?
Joe Stephens married Flossie

Carl Addison Stephens born 8/21/1891 in Johnson County, Texas married Mary
Emma Hunt born 6/16/1895 in Johnson County, Texas married 11/28/1910

Carl and Mary Emma had 7 children
Carl Addison Stephens, Jr. Married ?
Margaret Stephens died around age 6
Baby Stephens (still born)
Homer Odessa Stephens married Pauline ? and married Sue Merchant
Ivy Elmo Stephens married Loyce ?
Jerry Ray Stephens married Emma Coffman
Cecil Estes Stephens married Vera Browning

of these children that Carl and Mary Emma had only one is still living my
father Jerry Ray Stephens.  Because he is so much younger than his siblings,
he knows nothing of his family history.  I received a copy of a letter written
by Carl Addison to Cecil shortly before Carl died that listed these names with
some birthdates that he wrote from memory.  Although none of this is
documented.

I would very much like to research my family tree, but traditional research
has proved useless.  Since you have located so much information on the
Stephens family, perhaps you can share with me the best places to locate
records.  I would like to start with my grand parents birth's and their
children.  In addition, no one seems to know anything about the deaths of
Margaret or Mary Emma.  (Mary Emma died with my father was only 2 so you can
imagine he knows nothing about her or her family.)

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Susan Davis

I hope you can help.  I descend from Solomon Stephens who died about
1833 in Autauga Co., AL.  His daughter Rachel married Thomas Moore,
Wilkes County, Ga., 1813.  Solomon and his wife Bethany were members
of Sardis Baptist Church, Wilkes.  I believe Solomon to have been
related to John Stephens of Wilkes as there is an early land
transaction.  Solomon and Bethany moved, I believe to Twiggs County,
Ga., and then to Alabama by 1823.  Solomon was quite wealthy in
Alabama.  He was purportedly murdered and his widow, Bethany, married
Lazarus Battle Parker, some years her junior.  She died about 1852 in
Alabama.  Bethany mentions her son Issac in her will.  I do not
believe Bethany to have been Rachel's mother. Rachel died about 1828.

Family history says that she was related to Alexander Hamilton
Stephens, but so far, I have not been able to connect.  Do you have
information on this Solomon?  Helen Smith

Tom, I e-mailed you earlier on Solomon Stephens.  I have another
Stevens line from Georgia.  My ancestor is Nancy Ann Stevens, b. 1805,
N.C.  She married Jacob Evans between 1825-1830.  They are in 1830
census, Wilkinson county, Ga., living next to Abram Stevens.  I
believe the hash marks on the census to be erroneous.  Jacob and
Nancy named their only son Abram, so I am sure they are related.
Abram was a tax collector for Wilkinson 1834-36.  I don't know if
this was her father or brother.  The earliest Abraham I can find in
North Carolina is in Cumberland County, where John Stevens married
Elizabeth Matthews.  Do you have any research on them?  There was a
John Stevens living very near Abram in Wilkinson.  Helen Smith

Tom, I should have given more information.  There is a land deed 1805,
Arkillis Stephens and wife, Permilia Dearing Stephens sell land on
Clark's Creek, Wilkes county.

In 1808, John Stevens grants to Solomon Stevens 60 acres on Long
Creek, adj. James Lambert, Milliken and Solomon Stevens.  Orginal
grant to John Stevens and Joseph Moore.  Witnessed by James Lambert,
Issac Lambert and Joseph Stevens.

I feel certain this is my line, but can't figure which John Stevens
this might be.  In Wilkes, one John Stephens married Mary Quarnes,
the other Elizabeth Matthews.  I believe Mary Quarnes may have died
in Mississippi Territory.  Helen

March 5, 1997  We have been researching the Stephens families of Marshall,
Morgan and Jackson Counties, Alabama. Family tradition says there was a
Gabriel Stephens (died at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, age 75) who was father of
Willis Stephens was born abt 1775 in South Carolina.  Willis Stephens had
two marriages, 1st to Dicy ____. The known children of his first marriage
were Nicholas, md. Mary ____, Henry, md. Mary Randals.  His 2nd marriage
was to Cynthia Walker and they had a Willis md. Ruthie E. and a Jesse md
Jane (Walker?). Jane was part Cherokee.  Willis, son of Gabriel lived and
died at Bean Rock Hollow, on the Tennessee River, in Marshall County.  We
have accumulated many descendants of these names and would like to
communicate with anyone who relates to these names.

Stephens name for about 16-17 years.  Most of my ancestors originated in
North Carolina and moved to middle Tennessee, Lewis,Hickman and Perry
County area.  What do I do to get on the net or put inquiries on net??

About 10 years ago I got ahold of a copy of a Rev. War Widow Pension Request for my
ggggrandmother.  Learned from that her maiden name was Stevens.  However, I haven't been
able to find out anything about her (or my ggggrandfather for that matter) since then.

The following information is all I have on them.  Would appreciate any assistance anyone
can give me in finding out anything about them.  Haven't been able to identify any
siblings or parents for either one of them.

William PRATT (birthdate unknown) was born near the Strait of Hellgate, NY. Enlisted in
the Rev. War from Long Island, NY. Served in the war but there are several years between
that time and the time he married I haven't been able to account for.  He married Amelia
STEVENS on 6 January 1791 (place unknown). She was born in Virginia, about 1763,
although I don't know exactly where.

According to the copy of the family Bible that was included with the Request for Pension
Benefits they had 6 children.  Rebeckah, Jonah, John, Milley (or perhaps Amelia as she
is called on some census records), Dactcy, and William Sims.  Ran across someone who was
doing research on the Pratt line who had the same information I did except he also had
another child for them--Sarah.  The dates of birth for Sarah and Jonah are close. Sarah
30 June 1794 and Jonah 30 July 1794.

William and Amelia lived in Chester District (County) and York Counties, South Carolina.
William PRATT died 2 June 1819, Bullock Creek, York County, South Carolina.  I don't
have a death date for Amelia but she was age 83 in 1846 when she applied for the
Pension.  At that time she was living with her son, my gggrandfather, William Sims PRATT
in Bullock Creek, York County, SC.

I neglected to write down the source, and haven't been able to find it again, but at one
time I found an index for land records indicating a William PRATT in SC gave land to
Thomas STEVENS about the same time that William and Amelia married.  Have wondered since
if that was my William.

If anyone has any information, or suggestions how to follow through from here, I would
appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you very much.

Kathy Pratt

I am currently doing geneology for the Stevens line.  I am looking for
information on Thomas A Stevens (Black) from Sampson County North
Carolina born sometime around 1874, death records show father as Adam
Stevens.  1920 census listed him as 46 with wife Martha 44 and Son
Claudie James 17 and Robert Dealon 13, residing just off Turkey Road in
Piney Grove North Carolina.  I know that the further I go I will be
looking for the slave owner.  Do you have any information.  Please
reply.

Hi Tom
I got you mail today, my e-mail is (all lower case) jrkoz@stlnet.com
(l=L)
Phone 314-487-5428
I assume you want help with Stevens.  I read the sheet but It appears as
though you have more than one family mixed together.
James Town is the Maryland family
Zacharia=is probably the Pensylvania Family
Chowan NC is probably the Maryland family
South Carolina is from a later date than the rest coming
The South Carolina group I believe is the group that spread basically
down south,
Virginia group went to Kentucky-Ohio-Missouir and some later to
Louisianna.

Hi tom
I do not believe the Virginia Stevens went very far into North Carolina.
There travel was from Maryland to Essex to James River area then split
to Spotslyvania and another group to Bedford.  the group in Spotslyvania
tended to go to Ohio-Inda-St. Charles and St. Louis Missouri.  the group
in Bedford went with Boone to Kentucky then Lewis co Missouri.

The Maryland group were as a whole the same as the Virginia group, but
very early they spread down the coast of Virginia to Surry Co. etc.
along the coast of North Carolina. They were Scotch Irish as far as Ican
tell.

A group of JOhn Stevens (scotch Irish) were baptist ministers from the
James River area.
The New Hanover group with Hardy etc. I believe was a British Isle
Stevens (they were in England-Ireland and Scotland) that came down from
Penn.  This group spread down towards the center and western part of
North Carolina into Tenn. then Ark etc.  I know very little about the
South Carolina group except that they tended to stay in the southern
states also.

Remember that there are exceptions to all of these statements, I speak
in a general rule only, and usually only of the larger groups of
Stevens.  There were many smaller groups that came at latter dates that
intermingled with the larger families, claiming kinship even back then.
Remember it was an advantage legally and socially tobe from the older
well established families.  Many of the later families chose as first
names those from the larger older familes.

children, moved to Bedford County, TN in the early part of the 1800's. The info
I have states that John Stephens, Sr. was the son or grandson of the English
immigrant.  John Jr.  had several sons, including Ransom and my g-g-g-g
grandfather Josiah Stephens.  Any idea where this family fits in?

great?  If you have a specific question I will try to find an answer in our
documents.  Do you know anything about an Ezekiel Stephens of Christian Co.
KY then Madison Co. GA, born ca. 1792 in KY?  died in 1870's in Cobb Co.
GA.  Fought in War of 1812.

I am searching for the parents of my great-grandmother, Cynthia Stephens,
born in Alabama 16 Apr 1836 to a father from SC and mother from TN.  She
was married 18 Oct 1864 in Monroe Co MS to Hiram T. Watrous (his 3rd
wife), and died 1 Oct 1907 and is buried in Aberdeen, MS.

She was the sister of Menoah H. Stephens, born 3 Jan 1839 in Alabama and
who died 24 Jan 1913 and is buried in Aberdeen, MS.

Since your research on the Stephens families of Itawamba Co MS follows
some of the same paths as my family, I was wondering if you had seen and
discarded any information which might belong to my family but not yours.

the pages with the Genealogy information on them though.  Here is a list of
what you can take, and I'll make a link to you.  If you want them let me

Tom,
Ok, I have 54 ".htm" files to send you.  I spent last night and this
morning re-editing the copies I have on disk, removing all links to me,
etc., etc.
So this is how it is now:
(You need to make a link on your page to (#1) stepgen.htm and one
back to your page from stepgen.htm)

1. stepgen.htm (Main page for Stephens/Stevens Document and Records).
   it contains links to:
      2. virginia.htm (Virginia Colonial Records Page).
         (see 2. below)
      3. court.htm (Court Records Digest).
(links back to stepgen.htm and email for you).
      4. married.htm (marriage records Stephens/Stevens).
         (see 4. below)
      5. kozeny.htm  (Migration of Stephens/Stevens by Kozeny).
(links back to stepgen.htm and email for you)
      6. nesavste.htm (NE Settlers by Savage).
(links back to stepgen.htm and email for you)
      7. war_of.htm (War of the Rebellion Union/Confederate).
(links back to stepgen.htm and email for you)

(#2 from above - virginia.htm)
Contains links back to stepgen.htm and email for you, plus links to:
      8. 1812.htm
      9. admiralty.htm
     10. amherst.htm
     11. bassett.htm
     12. bouquet.htm
     13. chancery.htm
     14. confed.htm
     15. confed2.htm
     16. cornwall.htm
     17. culpeper.htm
     18. dunmore.htm
     19. excheque.htm
     20. indentur.htm
     21. lomc.htm
     22. lonng.htm
     23. lopag.htm
     24. loyalist.htm
     25. mexican.htm
     26. misc01.htm
     27. misc02.htm
     28. misc03.htm
     29. muster.htm
     30. mutual.htm
     31. portbook.hym
     32. rwbw.htm
     33. rwp.htm
     34. rwpsc.htm
     35. rwrc.htm
     36. secstate.htm
     37. wills.htm
(each of the above htm files #8 thru #37 contains links back to
virginia.htm, also a link on each back to stepgen.htm and and email for you).

(#4 from above - married.htm)
Contains links back to stepgen.htm and email for you, plus links to:
     38. almarry.htm
     39. armarry.htm
     40. gamarry.htm
     41. iamarry.htm
     42. ilmarry.htm
     43. inmarry.htm
     44. kymarry.htm
     45. lamarry.htm
     46. mdmarry.htm
     47. momarry.htm
     48. msmarry.htm
     49. ncmarry.htm
     50. ohmarry.htm
     51. scmarry.htm
     52. tnmarry.htm
     53. txmarry.htm
     54. vamarry.htm
(each of the above htm files #38 thru #54 contains links back to married.htm
and to stepgen.htm and also and email for you).

There is nothing in the above files that they could click on to jump to my
pages.  You would have to make (I think you already have one) a link to me
telling everyone that my link has several Stephens/Stevens lines or whatever.
After you put a link on your page (for Stephens/Stevens Documents and Records)
to stepgen.htm (and probably a link back from stepgen.htm to your page),
then all the above file are ready to upload and rename to .html files.

If you want to do this, let me know and I will immediately send you 9 emails
(each with 6 htm files attached, which will total all 54). Please let me
know when they are uploaded and on the net, so I can to and delete the files
off of my page (as I will keep them there until you get these up and running).

Thanks for offering to take these pages, as my site is getting fuller by the
day and with you taking the above files, everyone can still have access to
them.  I know I received alot of emails from the above files.

You should occassionly check out my pages (as I will yours), because I still
have a lot of Stephens/Stevens genealogy that was sent to me to post, but I
wanted to try and get my and my husband's personal lines on first. Which I
just posted my husband's Stephens line on my web site a few days ago.

If you respond fast enough I will send these files tonight as I stay up till
4 and 5 am every morning (as we have a nightclub).

As I run across more documents and records, and when I find the time, I can
put it in htm files and send it to you (telling you which page to link it
to, if you want).

Hello, my name is Keith Stephens, from Sylva, North Carolina.

I have traced our Stephens family line to Cornwall, England beginning
with Andrew Stephens in 1657. I know of a Richard Stephens in our family
line who is buried in Monroe County TN. Four of his children went north
to Illinois in 1832. Others of his family left TN and went to Missouri.
I know of at least three other Stephens lines or families that are not
related to me.

Since our line in NC begins in 1857, after the settlement in Virginia,
it is possible that some of the Stephens' in England first settled in
the state of Virginia. If you can send a pedigree shart, I would be
happy to pass it on to those I know in NC who are researching the
Stephens lines.

I am not on the internet, so please send anything you can snail-mail to:

Dr. Keith T. Stephens
1005 Ashe Loop Rd.
Sylva, NC 28779

or you can call me at (704) 586-9035 any time.

Thanks for anything you can do.

Keith Stephens

Jackie:   I am a descendant of Andrew Stephen,Sr., cousin to Andrew, son of
Alexander.  Andrew Sr. was born 1735-died 1798.  He moved to PA 1738.  I
have charts for our Ohio history, and the PA connection, but I am trying to
find out why Alexander and Andrew left Scotland in 1745.  I know they lived
in Leith, the port for Edinburgh.  I've posted notices to some genealogy
societies in Scotland trying to find the Scottish history of our clan, but
I've had no new info yet.  Are you aware of anyone who knows this early
history, or has found immigration records, etc.?
             Thanks.

Tom,
You should go visit my site again, I just re-edited Alexander Stephens
line and took out William being his father, with explanations as to why,
plus I added 29 letters of inqueries and information dated from 1882 to 1932.
Also, you know the bit, where you say you have problems with this,
referring to something you received from Loudie Moffat.  She had been dead
for over 4 years now.  Her daughter, sent me a letter and I immediately
called her back, that was in March.  She had 5 boxes of Stephens/Stevens
genealogy of her mothers in her garage.  Apparently, when Loudie died, her
husband donated it all to a Library, and about two years later the library
called him up, and asked him to come and get the boxes as they were
understaffed and had no one to take care of it (and he died a year ago).
Anyway, to make a long story short, she is suppose to send me the 5 boxes. I
hope there is some proof, documentation etc., for some of the stuff she has.
Anyway this daughter is a bookkeeper and said it would be after tax day,
before she could send it, and I am still waiting.  I probably should call
her back to see what the hold up is.
Later.....Jackie

I am looking for information on my grandfather.  His name was Benjamin
Franklin Stephens.  He was born July 5th, 1896, in Laurel, MS.  He died
in 1965 in Bogalusa, LA.  He had a brother who went by the name "Maxie".

We were told that we were decedents of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, so I
thought I would be able to find information on your web site, but have
not seen anything yet.

Could you help me with any information you might have, or maybe a
suggestion on where to go from here?

Thanks, Cindy

Dear Sir,
I am in search of Murley"s Bartletts, and Wells families all from Tippah
and Prentiss co. Miss.
I have in my possession a memorial to a great great grand father of mine
Joseph Morehead Wells,
He organized a unit known as The Blackland Gideonites part of the 23rd
Mississippi regiment,
some of their service is described in the memorial. I also have a very old
book listing the 24th 27th, and 29th reg. and their rosters, and a bit of
their history, it came from my Grandmother, Minnie Myrtle
Bartlett Murley. Her Father, James K. Bartlett, was listed as a fourth
Sergeant in the Tippah Rangers.
My plan is to scan these and make them public over the internet. Also in a
few days my genealogy
web page will be up, or at least the very first part.
          http://www.crystalmountain.com/index1.htm
I will be happy to correspond with you on any of this.
Thanks,
Larry Murley

I have been working on my STEPHENS line for quite awhile. I have
evidence that I descend from a JOHN STEPHENS who was born in Paxton,
Pennsylvania in the 1700s. He married a woman named MARTHA or MARGARET
who was from Frederick County, Virginia. Their first children were born
there; I come from the son, JOHN  W. STEPHENS. JOHN (the elder) and
MARTHA (or Margaret) moved to  Highland, Ohio in 1809 and both died in
1854. Their will was probated on January 2. The son, JOHN W. STEPHENS
(who was the administrator) married Catherine ? . Their son, WILLIAM H.
STEPHENS was my great-grandfather. His son, JOHN WASHINGTON STEPHENS(a
confederate soldier from Texas) was my grandfather. His son, EUGENE DEBS
STEPHENS, was my father. I did not take my husband's surname when I
married, so I am a STEPHENS and always will be.

I read on page 7 on the STEPHENS genealogy page that LOUDIE S. MOFFETT
stated that ALEXANDER STEPHENS married CATHREN BASKIN, daughter of James
Baskin of Paxton, PA. The name of that town rang a bell with me. Do you
know anything about the STEPHENS line which lived in Paxton in the
1770s?

Also, on pages 6 and 7 of the STEPHENS genealogy page a WILLIAM STEPHENS
and his brother, SAMUEL STEPHENS are mentioned as lived in or owning
land around Winchester, VA. This is in Frederick County. Do you anything
about this STEPHENS line?

Thank you!!!

Hi Tom
i did a quick search of my files (which I am ashamed to admit) are now
is shambles.  I have just too many projects on line right now with
research for 36 families.  I am doing a volunteer project for Babler
State park.  Babler is made up of some old plantations here in Missouri.
the plantations were owned by members of my family and I have been
asked to send a presentation in for a museum they are thinking about
doing.
I could not lay my hands on GenAdam Stephens files right away, but I
will keep an eye out for that file.  In the meantime I can tell you that
Gen Adam Stephens never married, though he did have a daughter with his
house keeper.  she was the only descendent he had.  Gen Adam Stephens
had two brothers I believe their names were William and robert.  William
died before Adam and like Adam named Robert in his Will. Robert went to
Kentucky and his records were mixed into my family records.  I have not
traced him any further.  Gen Adam Stephens fought in the French and
Indian wars from Caroline Co. Virginia where he undouptedly met My
family of stevens (research tried to connect him, but I have found no
proff of his connection.)  Gen Adam Stephens then was stationed at I
Believe Fort Pitt (now West Virginia)with George Washington.  Adam got
drunk one Christmas Eve and sent his scouts out to find him some British
to kill.  this Scouting expidition cost Washington a surprise attack and
Gen Adam Stephens was dismissed for his drunken attact. This was
probably more a political reason than an actuall problem.  The separate
Generals were very jealous of each other and Gen Adam Stephens was a
very popular General with the kentucky Long Knifes.  In fact I believe
that after his dismissal they may have called him Back because of their
need for his Kentucky Long Knifes.  I am not sure.  In any event the
West Virginia Historical society is building a meusum for him as their
most Honored Historical Figure and he has been very well researched.
Not one has been able to claim him other than his daughter (I forget her
married name) and his brother Robert Stevens.  I do not know what
happened to robert Stevens, we do have a lot of Robert Stevens in our
Family tree but I am sure there is no direct connection.

> Dear Tom
I have reviewed your site.  I am by no means an expert on Stevens, the
name is as common as rocks and I do not believe anyone is an expert.  I
can however all some generalaties for you.
Except for the borader line Counties and the extreme Eastern Shore of
North Carolina was populated by Stevens not from Virginia, but probably
from Pennsylvania.  These families were later immigrants then the
Virginia families.  The land in central North Carolina was offered to
German's by England to settle a law suit brought against the government
because they did not honor an agreement made to the Palentine Germans to
support them while they were settling in Duplin co. North Carolina.  The
Central portion of north Carolina was sold at a cheeper rate to the
Palentine Germans.
The Virginia Stevens were a large and old family with money backing.
they had a lot of sons, but were usually fairly well off and tended to
settle more in the back country of Virginia and later in Ohio and
Kentucky.
There was some mixing of the Maryland and Virginia Stevens.  the
Maryland Stevens alsomigrated up towards Penn. in the disputed boarder
counties that were settled by the Mason dixan line.  The Maryland
families may also have mixed with some of the North Carolina families
but once again I doupt it.
The Maryland and Virginia families were (by the time the North Carolina
families arrived) fairly well established and though they themselfs were
of the merchant class they tended to marry into English (minor) royalty
and military class englishmen.  This group would not have been eligiable
for the low cost land of North Carolina, nor would they have wanted that
land.
The North Carolina settlements were strictly family farms with no access
to the English markets for tobacco, hemp, etc.  Even the less prosperous
Virginia and Maryland families had contact with the merchant class
stevens and tended to follow the Milliatary and tobacco planting
families.
these are my reasons that I believe that those who trace their roots to
North Carolina other than the affore mentioned Extreme east coast and
Max Coppages family along the boarder of Virginia are not of the same
families as the Virginia families.  The north Carolina families are
later immigrants and probably more closely related to the Pennsylvania
and South Carolina families.  Most of the Virginia and Maryland stevens
seem to have migrated to West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas
and eastward. While the North Carolina families tended to go to the
cheeper Indian Territories of Tenn and Arkensaw etc.

I did note your Jamestown info, and believe that it just adds confusion
to the pot.  Richard Stevens had two sons Samuel and William.  Because
Samuel was an early governor of Maryland and married minor royalty many
people of North Carolina try to trace themselfs to him.  He and his
brother William both died without issue.  I think you would be better
off stating that from the first and save a lot of confusion for those
taping in on your e-mail.
I do find your York Co. notes interesting and would like to see and
know more about them. The Stevens as I say were part of the rising
Merchant Class in England and very involved with shiping etc.  York co.
is a perfect site for them and I have wondered if they could be
relatives to the Maryland Stevens,
If you have the naem of the CD that was used for the York Co. Info or
any other referecnces i would appreciate that info.
I am sorry I cannot be of more help.  I know that to talk of something
in "General" can get you flamed by indivdual instances where your
general information does not apply, but I still think that it will help
to straighten out this stevens mess.  so if you would like to put my
name to the general info above be my guest. I have been flamed by many
people whom I respect in the Genology world, but none has been able to
diswade me from the generalization I have made above.  Infact it was the
research of these people that caused me to draw these conclusions.
