Hi Tom Here is theJamestown info I promised. I checked your info and believe that Ican add a little insite to your Info. Remember this is all theory! I have no proff of this info.
In 1610 the New Jersey company sent Henry Hudson with an English ship to Hudson bay and claimed it for England ( it had privously been claimed by the Dutch) In 1609 the London company (later known as the Virginia company) sent a shipload of Gentlemen to Jamestown Virginia.
The London compay and New Jersey company land grants
overlapped at the Chesapeake Bay area and no settlement was supposed to
take place in the overlap. the Virginia company sent an expedition in May
1609 into the area to explore the chesapeake Bay. Captain Smith from jamestown
and Harry Spellman (Spelman family marries into the Stevens later)
Two Stevens brothers were with the Jamestown group(John
and Richard Stevens) and were contemporaries of Harry Spelman (see Spelman
web page) the Jamestown group were Gentleman who came from england. a ship
from England arrived in 1609 and about 7 more shipsarrived before 1619.
After 1619 the colonies starte to survive and many more ships began to
arrrive. Two Brothers of Jamestown: 1.John Stevens above must have been
a carpenter because he was hired to build a cabin for the chief of the
Powhatan-brother of Pocahanta, but I have been unable to find more information.
2.Richard Stevens wed Elizabeth Piercy born 1600 is called a Paynter-Stayner and the worshipful company of Paynters-Stayners he had two sons A. Samuel Stephens who died with out issue and his wife married Gov. Berkley after his death. b. William Stephens who only had one son. Williams(1) son William(2) died with out issue before his father (William 1).
CONCLUSION: THE ONLY DESCENDENTS FROM JAMESTOWN WOULD HAVE COME FROM JOHN STEVENS OR STEVENS WHO CAME OVER AFTER THE ORIGINAL JAMESTOWN STEVENS. MANY PEOPLE FROM NORTH CAROLINA TRY TO TRACE THEIR HERIATAGE BACK TO SAMUEL STEVENS BUT AS YOU SEE HE HAS NO ISSUE.
YORK CO. VIRGINIA STEVENS Some people have tried to connect the above John Stevens from Jamestown with the York Co. Virginia Stevens, but no connections have been proven. The records of the time are very sparce because of records being burned first by the British and then during the civil War. the possibility exist that the Jamestown and York river colonies were related because of the close proximity. the colonist tended to stay along the tide waters, moving into the fresh water tributaries for farming. A John Stevens of York co. Virginia marries a cousin of George Washington, Ann Washington in the early 1700 (I am not sure of the date, sence it was not my direct line I did not save the info, but the info cam be found in Eugene Stevens notes and the Historical Lib.) This John Stevens and his wife Ann had two sons John and Thomas. the family moved down to the Chowan North Carolina district and it was suggested by one of Eugene's contacts that the sons of John Stevens John Jr. Stevens- was the progenitor of Max Coppage's family and moved to Rockingham co. N.C. Thomas Stevens-was the progenitor of a family in Caldwell Co.N.C. which was just across the river from John Jr. Stevens above. Through an Alice Stevens will there is a relationship between Barnabus and Thomas. Barnabus seems to be a favorite name for North Carolina Stevens families. I suspect Barnabus was the progenator of a very large family that migrated to Tenn and on to Ark.
NOTE; ONCE AGAIN REMEMBER THAT THIS IS ALL THEORY !! I am sorry to keep saying this but I am sure you realize that the Stevens name is as common as rocks and no one person can research all aspects of this name. My only claim to the above info is years of research of at least 25 hours per week and a determination to find out as much about the Stevens as I can. Esther

PLEASE--PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS GENERAL AND WILL NOT APPLY
TO ALL STEVENS IN VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA. MAX COPPAGE'S
FAMILY BEING A NOTABLE EXCEPTION.
I cannot prove it, but most of my fellow researchers know that I believe
that the Virginia and Maryland Stevens are related. I also believe
that Max Coppage's family is part of the Virginia family, eventhough he
lives in North Carolina. Most of the Virginia Stevens tended
to migrate to the lower portion of Pennsylvania (washington Co.) and West
Virginia through the Greenbriar area. They headed for the Ohio River
where the Culpeper and Caroline Co. Virginia Stevens had land grants.Culpeper
and Caroline Col Virginia Stevens almost all fought in the French
and Indian Wars and the Revolution and were paid in land grants.(The
Virginia stevens were planters and soldiers)
I tend to base my reasons on a combination of family
tree data and history (I am a bit of a history buff). Historically the
interior of North Carolina is populated by Palantine Immigrants like the
Peter Stevens' family. To make a long story short- Gov. Berkley owned most
of North Carolina and promised the Duplin Co. North Carolina German Immigrants
support when they agreed to
populate his area. He did not keep the promise and was sued in England.
He made
some restitution by selling land in the Central portion of North Carolina
to Palantine (German Immigrants) cheap. This was no great loss to Gov.
Berkley sence the North Carolina land was not prime land. There were few
ports to North Carolina. Chowan Co. NC. had ports but they
were dominated by pirates and inaccessiable by the heavier English
Ships.
Because of this reason the Virginia
Planters (Stevens) would not have been interested in North Carolina.
The Planters needed ports to ship their good to England and North Carolina
hand none. Leaving North Carolina only good for small family farms.
The Palantine's were small farmers who landed
in Duplin about 1710 or so (if anyone is interested there are numberous
articles etc on the Palantine movement in N.Y., Penn.,Virginia,North and
South Carolina.) Sence Gov. Berkley was selling land cheap to Germans many
of the Palentines from "Up North" migrated down to North Carolina.
A second Group that went to North Carolina
from were the Scotch Irish who went to North Carolina because it was not
accessiable by the British. the Scotch Irish prefered home rule and the
Pirates kept "Big Government " at out. In a way "Black Beard" may
be called a father of American
indepenance (how's that for sticking my neck out).
A third group in North Carolina was from (the then unknown South Carolina and Georgia). Sence there were no ports to use in North Carolina ship load of Palantines were also set ashore below North Carolina in South Carolina etc. All of these groups tended to stay but a short while in North Carolina. The small farms could not support the children etc. and an industrious farmer wanted to expand and develop markets for his products. They tended to migrated further and further west towards Tenn and lower Kentucky heading for the cheaper land of the Mississippi and its tributaries where they couldship to New Orleans.
CONCLUSION: IF I HAD A STEVENS FAMILY TREE FROM SOUTH OF KENTUCKY
I WOULD TEND TO LOOK TO NORTH CAROLINA-SOUTH CAROLINA FOR ANCESTORS.
ESPECIALLY IF MY ANCESTORS WERE GERMAN. AN EXCEPTION (AND THERE ARE
ALWASYS EXCEPTIONS) WOULD BE THE FAMILIES IN LOUISIANA AND TEXAS THAT ARRIVED
THERE IN THE 1850. TEXAS WAS THE CONFEDERATE CAPITAL OF MISSOURI
BECAUSE GOVERNER JACKSON OF MISSOURI WAS A SOUTHERN SYMPATHISER AND WAS
DRIVEN OUT OF MISSOURI. HE BROUGHT WITH HIM MOST OF THE SOUTHERN
SYMPATIZERS OF MISSOURI TO TEXAS. LOUISIANA WAS A PORT USED BY SOUTHERNS
EXCAPING THE UNION SOLDIERS UP NORTH.
I HOPE THIS HELPS !

PS. I WILL SEND ANOTHER E-MAIL ON YOUR JAMESTOWN LATER.
I SEE A
COUPLE OF PROBLEMS WITH YOUR INFO ON THAT GROUP .

General Adam Stephens Eva
Kozeny
Hi Tom
I did a quick search of my files (which I am ashamed to admit) are
now
is shambles. I have just too many projects on line right now
with
research for 36 families. I am doing a volunteer project for
Babler
State park. Babler is made up of some old plantations here
in Missouri.
the plantations were owned by members of my family and I have
been
asked to send a presentation in for a museum they are thinking about
doing.
I could not lay my hands on Gen. Adam Stephens files right away, but
I
will keep an eye out for that file. In the meantime I can tell
you that
Gen Adam Stephens never married, though he did have a daughter with
his
house keeper. she was the only descendent he had. Gen Adam
Stephens
had two brothers I believe their names were William and robert.
William
died before Adam and like Adam named Robert in his Will. Robert went
to
Kentucky and his records were mixed into my family records. I
have not
traced him any further. Gen Adam Stephens fought in the French
and
Indian wars from Caroline Co. Virginia where he undouptedly met My
family of stevens (research tried to connect him, but I have found
no
proff of his connection.) Gen Adam Stephens then was stationed
at I
Believe Fort Pitt (now West Virginia)with George Washington.
Adam got
drunk one Christmas Eve and sent his scouts out to find him some British
to kill. this Scouting expidition cost Washington a surprise
attack and
Gen Adam Stephens was dismissed for his drunken attact. This was
probably more a political reason than an actuall problem. The
separate
Generals were very jealous of each other and Gen Adam Stephens was
a
very popular General with the kentucky Long Knifes. In fact I
believe
that after his dismissal they may have called him Back because of their
need for his Kentucky Long Knifes. I am not sure. In any
event the
West Virginia Historical society is building a meusum for him as their
most Honored Historical Figure and he has been very well researched.
Not one has been able to claim him other than his daughter (I forget
her
married name) and his brother Robert Stevens. I do not know what
happened to Rrobert Stevens, we do have a lot of Robert Stevens in
our
Family tree but I am sure there is no direct connection.
